If you have a first-floor bedroom that doesn't quite work for you, then you can improve the space by building a bump-out addition on the room. These extensions run along external walls; you can either create a smaller nook-like space or an extension that makes the whole room bigger.

What can a bump-out do for your bedroom?

Make the Bedroom Bigger

If your bedroom is currently only big enough for a single bed, then a bump-out can add enough space to the room to turn it into a double bedroom. If your bump-out runs along one side of the room, then you gain useful extra footage.

Some people do this to turn small bedrooms into guest rooms. If you add enough space for a double bed and some storage, then you can have couples stay.

This is also a useful step for a child's bedroom, especially when they reach their teenage years. Teenagers need more personal space. Your child has room to grow in a double bedroom.

Get Space For a Bathroom

Your basic bedroom space might be enough for your sleeping and storage needs; however, it might not be big enough for the bathroom you'd like to have in the room. Even if you have an ensuite at the moment, you might only be able to fit in a small shower and a toilet.

If you add a bump-out to the room, then you can build or enhance a bathroom. If you have enough room outside, then you can add a completely new bathroom to the room. Or, you can remodel an existing bathroom to make it big enough to take a bath as well as a shower.

Build a Walk-In Closet

If you've always dreamed of having a walk-in closet, then a bump-out is one way to add this space to an existing bedroom. You can use this extra space to build a separate room to store all your clothes, shoes, and accessories.

This also frees up space in the bedroom itself. If you have a walk-in closet, then you can get rid of your current closets and storage units. Your bedroom will be bigger. You'll have more space to relax.

Create a Relaxing Nook

Some homeowners don't want to significantly extend a bedroom. They simply want to create some space in which they can relax. For example, you might want somewhere where you can sit and read or do some craft work.

You can use a bump-out project to create a small relaxation space. For example, you could add a bay window and build a window seat. Or you can create a small nook that is big enough for a comfortable armchair.
